Born in 1927 to a struggling young architect and his socialite wife, the author spent the first few years in Duesseldorf, pampered by several generations of a loving old family. After her grandfather’s bankruptcy, her young parents had to make it on their own through bad economic times and the crumbling Weimar Republic. They barely scraped by. The divorce and the war took her father from her. Charlotte was raised in Munich by her brave mother who was now struggling to hide her Jewish ancestry. The war and ensuing occupation dominated her teen years. largely ignorant of the implication of hitler’s indoctrination, she was confronted and enlightened by her resolute aunt lore.
After her return to Munich and meeting Howard Evans, a newly minted lieutenant of the U.S. army infantry, her life took a dramatic turn. after a nine-month courtship, the 23-year old lieutenant and the German teenager decided to marry. In 1946, non-fraternization had ended, but marriage was still impossible. The couple had to wait until the following year. Howard went back to Wisconsin and resumed his studies, while Charlotte graduated from high school with her Abitur. She was still only nineteen.
In 1947, Congress enacted the so-called war bride act and Howard was finally permitted to bring his future wife to the United states. With the help of the GI Bill and part time jobs, they prepared themselves for their respective academic careers, at first Howard with a Ph.D. in european history, later Charlotte with a Ph.D. in German literature and language.
