“Carole Leigh Litten is a true aviator. She has mastered the technical and textbook details of flying, but used her skilled flying instincts with her book knowledge as a background to fly the airplane when the bad stuff ‘hit the fan’.”
Admiral Kenneth “Pete” Pettigrew, USNR (Ret.)

“On Wings of Trust dares to expose the thin line between safety and profit in our society. Anyone who’s been on a commercial airline will empathize with the gutsy heroine of this well-researched memoir. Carole Leigh Litten’s story, as told to Maynard Poland, kept me engaged throughout as she overcomes adversity to fulfill her dream.”
Norine G. Johnson, Ph.D., Former President, American Psychological Association

To anyone who has been on an airplane:
Who can you trust at 37,000 feet?

This is the true story of Carole Leigh Litten’s struggle to become a Navy, then a commercial pilot. Along the way, Carole overcame severe gender bias and resisted harassment. She also faced bogus threats of court-martial and imposition of needlessly dangerous pilot training maneuvers by some Instructors. Her Navy adventures include anecdotes about physical fitness and wilderness training, tracking Russian submarines in the Caribbean, fatal episodes involving fellow pilots, collecting information for feedback to atomic subs, and while based in Africa and Europe, surviving an attempted kidnapping into white slavery in Dakar, Senegal, and a bar fight in Lisbon, Portugal.

Carole was Captain of a commercial aircraft that had two emergencies in one flight, threatening the lives of 114 passengers and crew. For over a year, she searched for an explanation of the engine failure that caused the emergencies, and finally discovered an engineer's certification for flight that was a betrayal of the trust pilots must have in the maintenance of the aircraft they fly.

This memoir is a tale of challenge and adventure that will interest and entertain anyone who has been in an airplane. Expanded and updated 2011.
