Eugene O'Neill is widely regarded as one of America's greatest dramatists and a pioneer of modern American theater. Born in New York City in 1888, he was the son of a successful stage actor and drew heavily from his own turbulent life experiences in his writing.

O'Neill revolutionized American drama by introducing psychological depth, realism, and tragic themes that had previously been more common in European theater. His most celebrated works include Long Day's Journey into Night, The Iceman Cometh, Mourning

Becomes Electra, and The Emperor Jones.

During his career, O'Neill won four Pulitzer Prizes for Drama and, in 1936, became the first American playwright to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. His work explored themes of family conflict, identity, addiction, fate, and the human search for meaning.

He died in Boston in 1953, leaving behind a body of work that transformed American theater and continues to influence playwrights around the world.
