📜 Earliest Known Publisher (Ancient World)

  • Titus Pomponius Atticus (1st century BCE, Ancient Rome)He is often cited as the first true publisher. Atticus organized the copying, editing, and commercial distribution of manuscripts—especially works by Cicero—much like a modern publisher (minus printing).

🖨️ First Major Printer-Publisher

  • Johannes Gutenberg (c. 1450, Germany)Gutenberg invented the movable-type printing press, making mass publication possible. While technically a printer, his work launched the modern publishing industry.

    • First major published book: The Gutenberg Bible (c. 1455)

📚 First Modern Publishing House

  • Aldus Manutius / Aldine Press (founded 1494, Venice)Often considered the first modern publisher:

    • Introduced editorial standards

    • Published affordable books

    • Created the italic typeface

    • Focused on authorship, branding, and readership

🌏 Even Earlier (Non-Western)

  • China (Tang Dynasty, 7th–9th century)Woodblock printing was used centuries before Gutenberg. The Diamond Sutra (868 CE) is the oldest known printed book with a publication date.
